Arts in NJ Needs Your Help!

Please visit
and voice your objection to the Governor's freezing of state arts funding.
This action severly impacts the
Somerset Art Association
&
every cultural organization across the state
From Art Pride
December 9, 2009 -Recognizing the dire condition of State finances, contractually committed funding from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts has been frozen to hundreds of the State's arts organizations. This will have a catastrophic effect on New Jersey's arts community.
Arts organizations have long-standing commitments to artists, vendors, staffs and patrons in reliance upon the expectation that their grant contracts with the State would be honored (by the end of the 2009 calendar year). Money that was imminently to be released by the State to arts groups is now frozen, exacerbating already fragile organizational budgets. Many that operate on a calendar year are not able to meet year end obligations, most notably payroll.
Full disbursement of these contractually committed funds is essential. In some cases, the ongoing viability of venues could well hang in the balance.
On behalf of the Somerset Art Association,
thank you in advance for voicing your support and helping to overturn this heinous decision!

New Prize Announced for Artists Under 35

Attention! Attention!

For all you burgeoning artists under 35, check out this news article from the NY Times!

http://bit.ly/5I2fPZ

Of course you should read the whole article if you are interested as it is a very sweet opportunity, but for those who like to read the ends of books first:

"Applications can be submitted from Jan. 18 through April 18 at futuregenerationartprize.org. Twenty short-listed artists will be announced on June 22 and receive an exhibition at the Pinchuk Art Center in Kiev. Their works will be posted online and a winner will be announced in December along with up to five runners-up."

ps. For those of you go-getters who click on the link to get to the application, it doesn't become active (as far as I know) until the submission start date of Jan.18. So for now, bookmark it and get to work on that art!
