40th anniversary celebration

The Somerset Art Association in Bedminster invites you to join us for an evening of iconic pop art time-travel back to the silvery surrounds of The Factory, Andy Warhol and his Superstars, the Velvet Underground and the infamous red couch.

Come as cool as you are on Saturday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m. to support the art center and its educational visual arts programming on our 40th anniversary and our transition toward a bright future as the Center for Contemporary Art (CCA). Tickets are $75 each and available at www.thecenterforcontemporaryart.org/ls_index.php.

Enjoy your 15 minutes of fame with live jams from Strange Brew, fine foods and the hippest live deejay playing the tunes from the groovy Sixties clique of Andy Warhol and The Factory. Graffiti, raffles and magic will all unfurl over this unforgettable evening in support of a great cause.

The CCA is driven by the desire to broaden, deepen and diversify participation among audiences. Our goal is to challenge and inspire students, teachers, artists, enthusiasts and members of the community.

For more information, please contact Special Events Coordinator Ellen Rannels at (908) 234-2345 or erannells@somersetart.org.

Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908-2004) is one of the most original, accomplished, influential and beloved figures in the history of photography. His inventive work of the early 1930s helped define the creative potential of modern photography, and his uncanny ability to capture life on the run made his work synonymous with "the decisive moment" -the title of his first major book. After World War II (most of which he spent as a prisoner of war) and his first museum show (at MoMA in 1947), he joined Robert Capa and others in founding the Magnum photo agency, which enabled photojournalists to reach a broad audience through magazines such as Life while retaining control over their work. In the decade following the war, Cartier-Bresson produced major bodies of photographic reportage on India and Indonesia at the time of independence, China during the revolution, the Soviet Union after Stalin's death, the United States during the postwar boom, and Europe as its old cultures confronted modern realities. For more than twenty-five years, he was the keenest observer of the global theater of human affairs -and one of the great portraitists of the twentieth century. MoMA's retrospective, the first in the United States in three deaces, surveys Cartier-Bresson's entire career, with a presentation of about three hundred photographs. The exhibit will be on view through June 28, 2010.
Bus Trip to MoMA
A bus trip has been organized to see the Henri Cartier-Bresson exhibit at MoMA on Thursday, April 22, 2010. The motor coach will leave the Clarence Dillon Public Library at 9:00 am and depart from MoMA at 3:00 pm. Tickets are $45 per person on a first come first served basis and include round trip transportation and entrance to the museum. Lunch on your own.
